Charlie Monthly Sponsorship

Charlie is a very special pony whose story has touched all of our hearts. He was rescued from an auction for slaughter when our founder, Christine, traveled there to save another horse about whom she had been contacted. After she arrived, she discovered Charlie, who quietly approached her and rested his nose in her hands, as though he had chosen her. Christine knew she couldn't leave him behind, and that day both Charlie and the horse she had originally gone to rescue came safely to HHH Ranch.

Although Charlie's early life remains a mystery, his extraordinary patience, gentle nature, and deep affection for children have led us to believe he may once have been a child's pony. It didn't take long for us to realize he possessed a rare gift for connecting with people, especially children with special needs. Charlie became a permanent member of our therapeutic riding program, where his calm, intuitive spirit helps riders feel safe, understood, and confident. For many of the children we serve, he has become a trusted source of comfort and emotional regulation.

Over time, we discovered that Charlie has another remarkable gift. He senses when a rider is about to experience a seizure. Although he is normally eager to follow every cue, he will suddenly stop, plant his feet, and refuse to move. We have learned that this is Charlie's way of alerting us to prepare. He remains quiet and still until the seizure has passed and the participant has been safely evaluated. It is an ability that has amazed both our staff and the families we serve, earning him the affectionate nickname, "the Unicorn."

Charlie's own journey has been just as extraordinary. In January 2025, veterinarians discovered that his colon had ruptured years earlier and had somehow fused to neighboring organs, allowing him to survive despite a condition that is almost always fatal. He was given only a 10% chance of survival. During surgery, nearly 70% of his colon was removed, neighboring organs were repaired, and a severe infection was cleared. Against all expectations, Charlie recovered with incredible strength. Within just a few days, he was eating well and his digestive system was functioning normally—an outcome that astonished his veterinary team.

Today, he is back where he belongs: carrying children toward confidence, healing, and hope. His resilience has inspired everyone who knows him and has only strengthened our belief that miracles still happen.
